It is dangerous to … Read more This early 1900s hand carved stool is carved from a single block of very dense wood. It is dangerous to carve these stools and requires an expert carver. The low legged Senufo stool was primarily used by women for utilitarian purposes allowing them to sit close to the ground while cooking by the fire, washing clothes by the shallow rivers, etc. It's heavy for its size and very solid. The Senufo people are a West African mainly agricultural rural group living in Cote d'Ivoir, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Women pass them down through the generations. I purchased this at a museum fundraiser and it was donated by a retired anthropologist who spent a lot of time in Africa. It has always been in a non-smoking home.
