A striking English Victorian oil portrait dated 1857, traditionally identified as **Mrs George Wood, Sarah Sophia Wood, née Clark**, and associated with British painter*John Wood (1801–1870)**.

The sitter appears quarter-length within an elegant oval composition. Her luminous complexion, dark hair and pale dress create a refined tonal balance, while her direct gaze lends the portrait considerable personality.

Traditionally described as John Wood’s sister-in-law, Mrs Wood appears to have been portrayed within a private family context.

The elaborate pierced gilt frame gives the painting exceptional decorative presence and makes it particularly effective within an English country-house, traditional, maximalist or collected contemporary interior.

The stretcher retains the historic identification:
