Original signed color aquatint by noted Mexican modernist artist Carlos Orozco Romero, titled Two Figures Dancing, from the portfolio Tres Aguafuertes en Color, published in Mexico City in 1939.
This wonderful composition depicts two highly stylized figures dancing, rendered in a bold palette of yellow, black, brown and white. The work is signed in pencil “C. Orozco R.” at the lower left and is beautifully presented under glass with a wide neutral fabric-covered mat and ornate gilt frame.
An impression of this same composition, Two Figures Dancing, is held in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Met identifies the work as a color aquatint from Orozco Romero’s 1939 portfolio Tres Aguafuertes en Color.
Orozco Romero was an important Mexican painter and printmaker associated with the development of Mexican modernism. He was also influential in Mexican art education and was a co-founder of the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda.” His work is represented in major museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.
A wonderful opportunity to add an important example of 20th-century Mexican modernist printmaking to a collection.
