The ancient city of Smyrna is known today as Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey. Smyrna’s connection with carpet weaving is known to date back to the early 18th century. Most of the known Smyrna carpets of this era were made with a distinctive palmate design. There are many known Smyrna carpets from late 18th century and most of 19th century. The production has apparently revived with many other carpet weaving centers late 19th century. Most of the known items from this era are large room size carpets. See less
