This lovely set of 8 polychrome transferware dinner plates present scenes from across America from the library of Currier and Ives Engravers. They are presented in very good condition with no crazing, chips, or cracks. They measure 10.5" across and are dinner plates and were most likely produced in the 1930s making them nearly 100 years old. The plates were produced by the Adams China Company, often in the 1920s and 1930s. Each plate features a distinct central scene with a consistent gray floral border and selective multicolor accents. The scenes are reproductions of popular Currier & Ives lithographs, depicting various aspects of 19th-century American life, such as "Husking," and "American Express Train"
The Adams England "Engravings for the People" plates were produced between the 1920s and 1940, with many sources specifying the 1930s as the peak production period. These plates feature scenes based on N. Currier's 19th-century lithographs, which were hand-colored after being transfer printed in gray on ironstone
The American scenes, originally from 19th-century N. Currier lithographs, were transfer printed onto the plates in gray and then hand-colored before the glazing process. The plates have a distinctive wild rose pink and yellow border. Lovely scenes depicting America's cultural heritage are presented. These include:
The Road - Winter - couple on horse drawn sleigh
American Express Train - steam locomotive running through cloudy landscape
American Homestead Autumn - Family picking apples near farmhouse
Home to Thanksgiving - family entering farmhouse with barn
The Rocky Mountains - Emigrants Crossing the Plain
The Star of the Road - Antebellum woman in carriage driving a horse
Woodcock Shooting
Husking
All in very nice condition, with no signs of heavy usage, or crazing. No chips or cracks. The transferware is bright.
