Chinese Yixing Zhusha Buddha head on a rosewood stand, a finely carved unglazed Yixing Zhusha clay Buddha head with a red and white glazed plinth at the neck, on a traditional Chinese Hongmu square stand. The buddha is finely carved and detailed, with long earlobes and the Ushnisha. the finely carved, traditional, Chinese, hongmu stand is included. Circa ROC period, no later than mid century.
Buddha : 7.25" high x 4" wide x 4" deep
stand size: 5.125" x 5.125" x 1.125" high
The traditional name for the "topknot" or the protuberance on the Buddha's head is an Ushnisha. It is one of the 32 major marks of a Buddha and represents his vast wisdom or consciousness. While often depicted as a topknot, it is technically a fleshy or cranial protuberance.
