This rare and vintage carved wood Kanaga initiation mask from the Dogon people of Mali.
the mask features the characteristic rectangular face with deeply recessed eye channels and the iconic superstructure—a double-barred cross with projecting vertical elements. Dogon artisans interpret this geometric form as a cosmological symbol, with the upper bar representing the celestial realm and the lower bar embodying the earthly plane. Worn by Dama society members during ancestral ceremonies, This 20th-century example demonstrates the refined carving technique and cultural significance that distinguish Dogon masking traditions.
