Vintage Italian bust of Dante Alighieri (1265–1321), the Florentine poet of the Divine Comedy, in compounded alabaster, circa 1950s.
Dante is shown wearing a laurel wreath over his traditional cap, in a high-collared garment fastened with small buttons at the neck. The bust rests on a round pedestal base, with a small plaque lettered DANTE and marked ITALY. The soft almond tone and compact size suit a bookshelf, desk, mantel or library table.
Compounded alabaster is crushed alabaster bound with resin.
Dimensions: 5" W × 2.5" D × 6" H. Marked Italy, with no maker's name.
Condition: Good. Original and unaltered, lovingly used, with some imperfections consistent with age, including a faint last letter on the front plaque. Please see the photos, and contact us for additional photographs or condition details.
About Dante Alighieri: Born in Florence, Dante was exiled from the city in 1302 and wrote much of the Divine Comedy in exile. The poem follows a journey through Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, and helped establish Tuscan Italian as a literary language.
