This Vintage Afghan Maimana Kilim, measuring 5'10" by 7'7", is handwoven with wool on a wool foundation by the Maimana tribes of Northern Afghanistan. Kilims and flat weaves are characterized by their lack of pile, created by tightly interlacing warp and weft strands to form a smooth, flat surface. Woven mainly on horizontal looms, this method results in sharp geometric patterns. Lighter and softer than traditional pile rugs, kilims were commonly used as sofa covers, drapes, pillows, tablecloths, wall hangings, and as insulation against severe cold.
