Inspired by traditional Coromandel lacquer screens, the panels depict an elaborate landscape filled with figures, pavilions, bridges, boats, trees, and gardens against a rich aged red and ochre background.

There is so much wonderful detail to take in. Figures stroll through gardens, gather beneath trees, cross bridges, and travel by boat, while architectural elements and dramatic rock formations weave the scene from one panel to the next. Raised and incised detailing gives the composition wonderful texture and dimension, with touches of green, red, cream, and black bringing the landscape to life.

Each panel is surrounded by a black lacquered border decorated with delicate floral and geometric motifs and topped with a pierced metal hanging bracket. The backs are finished in black lacquer as well. I especially love the tall, narrow proportions and the way the four individual panels come together to create such an impressive architectural statement on the wall.

The decorated fronts present beautifully, with most of the age-related wear concentrated along the outer edges and black border areas. Hung together, the four panels span approximately 48 inches, making them a substantial and wonderfully decorative piece of wall art.
