Introduction

A wonderfully individual hand-modelled ceramic sculpture of a seated Pit Bull Terrier-type dog, dating to approximately the late 20th century.

With its broad muzzle, deeply recessed eyes, folded ears and wonderfully substantial body, the sculpture captures the unmistakable character of the breed through an appealingly naïve Modernist vocabulary.

Its predominantly ivory-white surface is enriched by soft grey tones, darker incised lines and areas of pronounced crackling, giving the piece the visual character associated with experimental and Raku-inspired studio ceramics.

Both sculptural and playful, this is a highly distinctive decorative object with genuine handmade character.

Catalogue Note

This unusual ceramic dog possesses an appealing balance between recognisable animal portraiture and expressive simplification.

The sculptor has emphasised the physical characteristics associated with the bull-terrier type through the broad head, powerful shoulders and substantial hindquarters while deliberately simplifying the paws, ears and body.

Viewed from the front, the face has an almost human sense of expression. Deep-set eyes sit above an oversized muzzle delicately punctuated with whisker marks, while the asymmetrically folded ears add further personality.

From the side and rear, the sculpture becomes increasingly abstract. Incised lines and an extensive network of surface crackling animate the broad planes of the body, while the curving tail completes the seated silhouette.

The irregular ivory-white and grey finish gives the piece an established, tactile character particularly well suited to interiors combining vintage, Modernist, folk and contemporary design.
