Introduction

A wonderfully individual British studio pottery owl dating to circa the 1970s, combining playful animal sculpture with the tactile, strongly modelled character associated with Brutalist-influenced ceramics of the period.

Despite standing only 9.5 cm high, the owl possesses considerable visual presence. Its compact, almost architectural body is enlivened by vigorously worked feather decoration and an irregular earthy glaze that celebrates the handmade character of the ceramic.

Its most memorable feature is undoubtedly the pair of enormous projecting circular eyes. One appears fully open while the other is partially closed, creating an engaging and slightly eccentric expression with an almost Surrealist quality.

Catalogue Note

The owl has been conceived as an expressive sculptural interpretation rather than a strictly naturalistic representation of the bird.

Its rounded body and simplified frontal composition create a strong, weighty silhouette. This is contrasted by deeply incised and modelled decoration defining the wings and plumage.

Warm variations of brown, ochre, caramel and cream move irregularly across the ceramic surface, producing attractive depth and reinforcing the individuality associated with hand-modelled studio pottery.

The exaggerated circular eyes project prominently from the face almost as independent sculptural discs. Their asymmetrical treatment introduces considerable personality and transforms the familiar owl motif into something decidedly unconventional.

The combination of simplified sculptural mass, pronounced surface texture and earthy palette gives the piece a convincing Brutalist influence, while the unusual facial treatment introduces a subtle Surrealist character.

The Maker

The sculpture is unsigned and its individual maker has not presently been identified.

Its hand-modelled construction, earthy glazing, strongly worked surface and expressive animal form place it within the wider tradition of British studio ceramics of the later 20th century.

Comparable Brutalist-influenced animal sculptures and ceramic owls were produced by a number of British studio potteries during the 1960s and 1970s. However, no sufficiently close documented comparison has presently been established to justify attribution to a particular artist or pottery.

The sculpture is therefore conservatively catalogued as the work of an unidentified British studio potter, circa 1970s.
