Sigmund Abeles was born 1934 in New York City and raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He attended the University of South Carolina and earned a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University. He also studied at the Art Students League and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
His work can be found in British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Chicago Art Institute, Fogg Museum, the Met, MFA Boston, Philadelphia Museum, MOMA, Art Institute of Chicago, Georgia Museum of Art, Greenville County Museum of Art (SC), Yeshiva University Museum, Colby College Museum of Art and Whitney. A complete collection of his prints is held at Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, ME.
