Full of movement and expressive detail, this antique-style bronze horse sculpture captures the spirited character of a finely modeled Arabian stallion. Crafted in France circa 1950, after a model by renowned French animalier sculptor Pierre Lenordez (1815–1892), the composition depicts a saddled stallion named "Angelo," tethered to a short hitching post while a small barking dog stands beneath its raised hind leg.
The horse is portrayed in a lively pose, with one front leg lifted, its muscular neck gracefully arched, and its head turned downward toward the dog. The sculptor carefully rendered the flowing mane, textured tail, defined musculature, and intricate saddle and bridle details. A delicate chain rein connects the horse to the post, adding realism to the animated scene. The figures rest on an oval naturalistic base embellished with rocky terrain and vegetation.
Pierre Lenordez was a celebrated French animalier sculptor who specialized in equestrian subjects, particularly thoroughbred racehorses. Based in Caen, Normandy, he exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1855 to 1877. His sculptures are recognized for their anatomical precision, expressive poses, and detailed representations of distinguished horses.
The substantial bronze composition is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining a rich dark brown patina with warm highlights that accentuate the sculptural details. The piece weighs approximately 34 pounds.
