An authentic vintage Moroccan Berber Kilim rug, handwoven in Morocco during the mid-20th century, circa 1960. Measuring 66 inches wide by 120 inches long—approximately 5 feet 6 inches by 10 feet—this generously sized North African tribal rug presents a rhythmic pattern of horizontal stripes in dark burgundy red, muted pink, warm orange, black and natural ivory.
Handwoven in wool by Berber women using a traditional flat-weave technique, the rug has a low-profile surface without the heavy pile associated with knotted Moroccan carpets. This lighter construction makes it versatile and easy to incorporate beneath a dining table, in a living room seating arrangement, beside a bed or along a large hallway. It can also be displayed as a decorative wall textile, where its graphic striped composition reads like a work of abstract modernist art.
The composition is created through alternating narrow and broad bands of color. Deep burgundy and black stripes give the design visual structure, while pink, orange and ivory introduce warmth and movement. The ivory sections are derived from the natural color of the wool, while the colored yarns are reported to have been produced using traditional vegetable dyes. Variations in tone are expected in a vintage handwoven textile and contribute to its organic appearance.
Moroccan Kilim rugs were traditionally woven as practical household textiles, blankets and floor coverings. Each was individually conceived and made by hand rather than produced from a standardized commercial pattern. Subtle irregularities in the weaving, stripe widths, edges and coloration are therefore characteristic of authentic Berber craftsmanship. These details give the rug individuality and distinguish it from contemporary machine-made reproductions.
The sophisticated color palette works beautifully with natural wood, linen, leather, travertine, plaster and other organic materials. This vintage Moroccan flat-weave rug would complement a wide variety of decorating styles, including Tribal, Folk Art, Mid-Century Modern, Bohemian, Mediterranean, Spanish Colonial, Wabi-Sabi, Organic Modern and contemporary interiors. Its linear design can bring architectural order to an eclectic room while its warm colors soften a restrained neutral setting.
At 10 feet long, the rug has enough scale to anchor a substantial space. It can be positioned beneath a rectangular dining table, centered in front of a sofa, placed at the foot or side of a bed, or used as a large gallery-style wall hanging. The flat-weave construction also allows the rug to be layered over a larger natural-fiber carpet for a collected, designer interior.
The listed creator is the Berber Tribes of Morocco, identified as the weaver. The place of origin is Morocco, and the period is Mid-20th Century, with a date of manufacture of circa 1960. The principal material is wool, and the documented technique is hand-weaving with flat-weave construction. The recommended category is Moroccan and North African Rugs, with Tribal or Folk Art as the most appropriate style designation.
This one-of-a-kind vintage Moroccan Kilim is offered in good condition, with wear consistent with age and previous use. Natural variations in surface texture, weaving and coloration are part of its handcrafted character. Any visible age-related wear should be considered part of the rug’s history rather than a manufacturing defect. Please review the detailed photographs for the most accurate representation of the colors, edges, weave and overall condition.
