The wool is bright and silky, spun with greater thickness than normal Chinese wool. This type of rug was born around the '20s on the initiative of Walter Nichols, an American merchant who, having moved to China, opened in 1924 a manufactory of rugs, designed for the American market, which while maintaining some classical Chinese decorations, were characterized by their decidedly innovative style. These carpets born from the encounter between a decidedly Chinese style and the new art of furniture, so much in vogue in the West, are characterized by a renewed chromatic taste that ventures combinations of colors never before proposed. Cascades of flowers on the bottom combined with strong tones are the main feature of this production. See less
