An Extremely Rare, Fine Quality And Highly Decorative Pair Of 18th Century Georgian Chippendale Period Rococo Carved Giltwood Wall Mirrors, Having Replacement Shaped Mirror Plates Set Within Elaborately Carved And Pierced Frames, Featuring Profuse Scrolling Foliate Decoration, Stylised Branches And C Scrolls, The Tops Surmounted By Magnificent Carved Ho-Ho Birds with Outstretched Wings, Perched Upon Scrolling Supports, with Further Pierced Foliate Decoration And Bold Scrolling Cartouches To The Bottom.
These really are an exceptional pair of 18th century mirrors, with the wonderfully elaborate Rococo carving, unusual design and magnificent birds which surmount each frame giving them considerable decorative presence. The quality of the carving is particularly impressive, with the flowing C scrolls, pierced foliate decoration and naturalistic branches combining to create a wonderfully intricate and elegant overall appearance.
The mirrors retain a superb gilded surface, with the usual signs of age and wear adding considerably to their character. The mirror plates themselves are relatively recent replacements, providing clear and practical reflections whilst sitting comfortably within the original 18th century frames.
It is increasingly difficult to find genuine 18th century carved giltwood mirrors of this design, particularly surviving as a matching pair. Their elegant proportions and highly decorative appearance make them ideal for hanging either side of a fireplace, above a pair of console tables, or individually in a variety of settings throughout the home.
There are various historic losses, repairs and minor imperfections to the carved and pierced decoration, entirely consistent with their considerable age and delicate construction. These have been sympathetically preserved wherever possible, together with the old gilded surfaces, to retain the character and integrity of the mirrors.
Both mirrors have been carefully inspected and attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring they are clean, sound and ready to hang in the home.
