A walnut chest of drawers in the louis xvi style, crafted in the 19th century in the style of late 18th-century french chests of drawers. The even tripartite division of the front, the symmetrically arranged panels around round medallions, and the curved apron give the piece a calm, clearly proportioned appearance. Historical context: the chest of drawers originated in late 17th-century france as a further development of the chest, allowing for the organized storage of linens and textiles in drawers. In the late 18th century, neoclassicism under louis xvi shaped its form with straight fronts, clean panels, and antique ornamentation. In the 19th century, workshops revived this design language as part of the historicism movement, producing period furniture for bourgeois bedrooms, parlors, and hallways. These pieces combined traditional design principles with the living needs of a broader clientele.
features: the escutcheons are each set in a round, profiled medallion that interrupts the panels of the drawer fronts; the fittings feature a bow and laurel wreath; the locks are in their original condition. The top, with its profiled edge and chamfered corners, shows visible wooden pegs, indicating traditional joinery techniques. Design: the commode follows the formal repertoire of the louis xvi period, with a straight front, rectangular panels, and neoclassical ornamentation. The curved apron with its stepped center section echoes an element of the preceding louis xv period and reflects the common practice in french provincial furniture of combining both styles. The raised panels with concave recesses consistently guide the lines toward the central medallions. Short, slightly tapered square feet provide a restrained finish to the body.
dimensions: h 78 × w 124 × d 66 cm. Material and condition: walnut, decorative fittings presumably brass. Used condition with age-related wear, small scratches, and chips; see photos. Lighter patches of wood are visible on the top panel. Locks are in their original condition, keys are present. Surface is completely sealed.
