A pair of terracotta orangerie stoves, Italy, 19th century.
Each stands on a round foot and a turned stem. The body carries a band of pierced scallops under a beaded rim, shell ornament below, and a lion mask at either side. The domed lid is pierced and finished with a pinecone finial.
An orangery was the winter house for orange and lemon trees. These stoves were made for that room. A small fire or a pan of embers sat inside the pot, and the openings in the body and the lid let the heat out without an open flame in the house. The same form, lidded and ornamental, was then kept as a garden urn.
