A sacred Baroque stove plate (Ofenplatte), Germany, dated 1760.
Cast iron, in relief. Christ is shown crucified at the centre, the date split to either side of the cross: 17 and 60. At the left stands the Virgin; at the right a haloed figure with a book. Behind them are towers and domes of Jerusalem, a tree, and a crescent moon. The raised ground is picked out in gold against a dark plate.
Plates of this kind were set into tiled or iron stoves and into fireplace openings. The Crucifixion was a favoured subject in German foundries of the 18th century.
Height 63 cm (24.8 in), width 67 cm (26.4 in).
