the painting measures 66 × 93 cm (26 × 36.6 in) unframed and 87 × 113 cm (34.3 × 44.5 in) framed. Presented in a beautiful frame, not the original, but certainly well chosen.

a broad, still polder lake opens under a pale, cloud-streaked sky. On the left, a thicket of willow-like shrubs crowds a grassy spit where cattle graze, with a windmill small on the horizon beyond. A sailboat flying a pennant crosses the open water, and at far right a lone figure poles a punt along the reeds. The silvery greens, soft pinks and gray-blues are the hague school’s way of rendering damp dutch light.

born in mons, belgium, bauffe trained at the academy in the hague. He spent years painting the lake country around noorden and kortenhoef and this canvas very likely dates from those years around 1900. Bauffe favored watercolor, so an oil at this scale is the less usual side of his work. His work is held by the kunstmuseum den haag and the frans hals museum. Signed lower left in red and framed.
