Pair of original “Trieste” folding chairs designed in 1966 by Italian architects Aldo Jacober and Pierangela D’Aniello and produced by Alberto Bazzani.
The model won first prize at the 18th Trieste Fair in 1966, which gave the chair its name. Examples are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The V&A example is itself a red-stained, high-gloss lacquered beech chair with a woven cane seat — the same configuration as this pair.
Each chair is constructed from two rectangular-section beech frames, hinged at the upper back so the seat folds up and the whole piece collapses almost flat. The frames are finished in high-gloss red lacquer; the seats are woven cane (Vienna straw). Lightweight, stable when open, and easy to store.
This pair retains its original red lacquer and original cane. The lacquer shows honest vintage wear consistent with age and use: small chips, scuffs and areas of dulling, especially along edges and contact points. The cane is complete and structurally sound. No visible maker’s label.
A practical mid-century Italian design piece, equally suited as dining chairs, extra seating, or a decorative pair.
