The warm, slightly darker reddish-brown tone of the teak and the clear grain give the shelf a cozy expression, while the neat ends create the airy silhouette that characterizes the design.

The String shelf was designed by Kajsa and Nils “Nisse” Strinning in 1949 and won first prize in the Bonniers Folkbibliotek bookshelf competition that same year. The combination of simple form and flexible function has made it one of the most well-known classics of Swedish furniture design.

The shelves are hooked into the ends and can be placed at different heights, so that the distances can be easily adjusted to fit books, ceramics or other favorite things. The neat depth makes the shelf easy to place, for example above a sideboard, in the living room or at a small workplace. The open ends allow the wall behind to be part of the whole.
