Mohamed Allan Hamri (1932–2000) — Five Veiled Moroccan Women, Original Oil and Gouache Painting, Signed
An expressive original oil and gouache painting by Moroccan modernist artist Mohamed Allan Hamri (1932–2000), depicting five veiled women gathered beneath dark parasols against a vibrant turquoise-blue background. This captivating composition reflects Hamri's distinctive interpretation of Moroccan culture, traditional dress, and everyday life through a colorful, expressive, and highly individual painting style.
The five figures are portrayed wearing flowing white garments with vivid yellow accents and rose-pink face coverings. Their delicately rendered eyes emerge from beneath the veils, giving each figure a sense of individuality and mystery. Above them, five dark parasols create a rhythmic arrangement that contrasts dramatically with the saturated blue background.
Hamri's spontaneous brushwork, simplified forms, and expressive treatment of color give the painting an appealing sense of movement and character. The combination of bold colors, flattened perspective, and stylized figures demonstrates the artist's personal approach to figurative modernism and North African folk-inspired painting.
The artwork is signed in the lower right corner with the artist's distinctive HAMRI signature and additional Arabic script.
About the Artist
Mohamed Allan Hamri (1932–2000), commonly known as Mohamed Hamri, was a Moroccan painter, writer, and cultural figure associated with the vibrant international artistic community of Tangier during the mid-20th century.
Born in northern Morocco, Hamri became closely associated with the American writer Paul Bowles and the British artist Brion Gysin, who encouraged his artistic development and introduced him to European modernist painting.
Hamri was also instrumental in introducing the traditional music of the Master Musicians of Joujouka to an international audience. His involvement with the Tangier artistic community connected him to the Beat Generation and the cultural exchanges between Morocco, Europe, and the United States.
Throughout his career, Hamri developed a highly recognizable visual language characterized by colorful figurative compositions, expressive brushwork, traditional Moroccan subjects, and a direct, intuitive painting technique.
His paintings celebrate Moroccan cultural traditions, musicians, everyday gatherings, and local customs, establishing him as a distinctive voice within 20th-century Moroccan modern art.
Artistic Style and Collecting Appeal
Hamri's distinctive approach shares certain visual qualities with the expressive figurative traditions of Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy, Kees van Dongen, and Brion Gysin, particularly in the use of vibrant colors, stylized figures, and simplified compositions. These comparisons are stylistic rather than statements of attribution or collaboration.
This painting will appeal to collectors of Moroccan modernism, North African art, Mediterranean art, Orientalist-influenced figurative painting, outsider and naïve art, and mid-century modern works on paper or board.
Presented in a vintage dark wood frame with a narrow metallic inner border and cream-colored matting, the artwork is well suited for display in a contemporary living room, library, gallery wall, or eclectic interior combining modern and antique furnishings.
