This is a substantial and beautifully decorated vintage storage chest, crafted from Zitan wood (purple sandalwood) with a rich, dark brown-black finish.
The chest is a classic "treasure box" (duobaohe) form, featuring a large, lift-off lid and a deep interior compartment. The exterior is lavishly decorated with intricate mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay. The lid features a central inscription of the Chinese characters "花開富貴" (Hua Kai Fu Gui), meaning "Blossoms Bloom, Wealth and Honor," flanked by scenes of birds perched amongst flowering branches and stylized rockery. The front and sides of the chest are similarly adorned with vibrant inlay scenes of birds, peonies, and plum blossoms, rendered in shimmering white, pink, green, and yellow shell.
The wood displays a distinct "ox hair" grain texture and a smooth, lustrous patina. The chest is fitted with brass lock plates on the front and metal carrying handles on the sides. This impressive, large-scale piece is perfect for storing blankets, documents, or a collection of treasures, and serves as a stunning decorative statement in a living room or study.
