This is a charming and meticulously crafted vintage miniature cricket cage (or singing insect cage), made from Huanghuali wood (yellow rosewood).
The cage features a traditional hexagonal shape, constructed with closely spaced vertical wooden bars and a domed top. The rich, warm golden-brown wood displays a beautiful natural grain and a smooth, lustrous patina. The top is fitted with a brass-toned metal hook and a round finial, allowing the cage to be hung. Inside, there is a small horizontal wooden platform or perch.
The cage also features a sliding wooden door on the lower section. This piece is a wonderful example of traditional Chinese folk art and makes a unique decorative object, a perfect addition to a collection of scholar's objects, or a lovely display piece on a desk or shelf.
