Historical Significance

This pair corresponds closely to a multifunctional chimney ornament design patented by B. Days of Birmingham, England, circa 1840. According to the original European auction-house documentation, these ornaments were possibly manufactured in Birmingham, England, in association with the patented design.

Originally conceived as versatile mantel ornaments, these ingenious Victorian creations were designed to accommodate a variety of decorative accessories, including fire screens, candle shades, flower or fragrance pots, and clock cases.

Each ornament retains its removable gilt brass extension, allowing the pieces to be displayed in different configurations.

Museum Reference

Of particular historical importance, a closely related Gothic Revival chimney ornament attributed to B. Day is documented in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, inventory number M.64-1967.

This museum reference provides valuable historical context for the design and its place within the early Victorian Gothic Revival movement.

Decorative Appeal

Offered as a matching pair, these elegant architectural ornaments make an extraordinary statement displayed on a fireplace mantel, in a traditional library, or as sculptural accents within a carefully curated interior.
