This is a highly intricate and beautifully crafted vintage wooden puzzle box (also known as a "treasure box" or duobaohe), made from Zitan wood (purple sandalwood) with a "full gold star" (man jin xing) grain pattern. The wood features a dark, lustrous finish with dense, natural golden speckles that resemble a starry night sky.
The box's exterior is composed of a geometric, interlocking panel design. It is a traditional Chinese mechanical box, where the surface panels slide and interlock in a specific sequence to reveal the internal compartments. When the mechanism is engaged, multiple sliding panels extend outward, revealing five individual storage compartments within the 25x25 cm frame.
This type of box was traditionally used by scholars to store seals, small trinkets, or valuables. It is a beautiful example of traditional Chinese joinery and puzzle design, and it makes a stunning functional object or display piece for a desk or shelf.
