À demi-mot is an original oil painting from the Bibliothèques series by French contemporary artist Sophie Dumont.
Three shelves hold an arrangement of upright, leaning and stacked books. Cream, dusty pink, orange and muted green bindings are punctuated by deep blue, burgundy and ochre. Open spaces between the groups bring lightness to the composition, while a horizontal stack on the lower shelf balances the vertical rhythm.
The books have no readable titles, inviting the viewer to imagine their stories. The French title suggests a meaning conveyed without being fully spoken.
Successive layers of oil paint, applied with palette knife and brush, create a tactile surface. Scraped passages reveal underlying colours, suggesting the character of handled books and worn bindings.
