The title reads "The Turkish Empire in Europe and Asia with the Kingdom of Greece". The map reaches from Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia in the west to the Caspian Sea and Persia in the east, and from Bessarabia, the Crimea and Circassia in the north to the Nile delta and the Arabian desert in the south. It shows Servia, Wallachia, Moldavia, Bulgaria, Roumelia and Albania, Anatolia with its mountain ranges, Syria, Palestine and Mesopotamia. Greece is outlined in orange and the Ionian Islands in red. Below the title is the line "Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." Two scales run up the right margin: "French Leagues 25 = 1 Degree" and "English Miles 68·95 = 1 Degree". The plate number 16 is engraved above the upper right corner, and the imprint "London, Edward Stanford 6 Charing Cross." runs below the lower border. At the mouths of the Danube the map is lettered "Boundary of Russia by Treaty of Paris 1856", and along the River Pruth a dotted line is marked "Boundary previous to 1856". The plate comes from The Harrow Atlas of Modern Geography, published by Edward Stanford in London in 1858 and sold at Harrow by Crossley and Clarke, booksellers to Harrow School. Its maps were selected from the series of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in London in 1826, which issued its maps in parts from 1829 and was wound up in 1848; Stanford later issued them under his own imprint. On this sheet the 1856 boundary is drawn beside the earlier line along the Pruth, so the map records the frontier change in Bessarabia that followed the Crimean War, while Moldavia and Wallachia are still shown as separate principalities. Condition: Complete sheet with a small V-shaped notch to the bottom edge at the center fold. A center fold, as issued. Light, uneven toning, slightly darker toward the edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. A few small light flecks in the printed area. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed. See less
