An oval, life-size, stately portrait of a noblewoman from the time of Empress Catherine II (the Great) of Russia, wearing precious jewelry and a magnificent, courtly brocade gown adorned with fine lace, with an oriental-style, turban-like headdress. The charm and artistic quality of the painting lie not only in the opulent texture of her costume but also, in particular, in the sensitive characterization of the figure and the subtle rendering of her soft features through a nuanced flesh tone.
