This rare ceramic vase, designed by Axel Salto and produced by Royal Copenhagen in Denmark, is a refined example of Salto’s signature organic expression within the field of 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics. Executed in the Sung glaze technique, the surface presents a richly textured and multicolored finish, characterized by natural transitions between earthy browns, soft greens, and creamy tones. The glaze is applied in a way that accentuates the depth and dimensionality of the sculptural form, producing a dynamic, living surface that evolves with light and viewing angle. The vase has a vertically cylindrical form, but the surface is articulated with a rhythmic diamond-lattice relief pattern that gives it a structured yet irregular texture. These raised, repeating motifs lend the vase both visual complexity and a tactile quality that aligns with Salto’s celebrated exploration of naturalistic and abstract forms. The top rim is scalloped, with gentle undulations that soften the verticality of the form and echo the organic themes present throughout the design. Condition is excellent, with the glaze fully intact and free from chips, cracks, or restoration. The glaze retains its luster and depth, and the surface is evenly preserved. There are no structural imperfections, and the integrity of the ceramic body is complete.
