This live-edge Cherry Burl bowl is by Hoyt G. Brown a North Carolina wood turner and second-generation Appalachian woodcarver.
Brown was born in 1948 and grew up in the Brasstown, North Carolina. His parents were both woodcarvers, supporting their family through their carving, and Hoyt followed them into the craft.
His work celebrates the natural character of native Appalachian woods, allowing the grain, knots, bark and irregular shape of the wood to become part of the finished piece.
This bowl is a wonderful example of that approach. Rather than forcing the burl into a perfectly symmetrical form, Brown retained its dramatic natural live edge and bark, creating a free form bowl with organic lines.
The interior has been smoothly turned and finished, bringing out the rich reddish-brown color and swirling grain of the burl. The rugged bark edge provides a beautiful contrast to the polished interior.
Signed on the underside Hoyt G. Brown – Cherry Burl.
Measurements:
9" across at the widest point . 6" interior circumference . 2 3/4" tall
The rests on a 3" circumference base that is 1/16th" T
Excellent vintage condition with the natural variations, irregularities and bark associated with burl wood and the artist's live-edge design.
A beautiful piece of American craft that works equally well as a sculptural object, centerpiece or addition to a collection of Appalachian folk art.
