A beautiful and charming vintage jug in French studio ceramics, designed and made by ceramist Albert Thiry (1932–2009) in the pottery town of Vallauris in southern France. The jug represents Thiry's unique artistic expression during the 1960s or 1970s. It is made of a coarse, chamotte-fired earthenware that gives the object a wonderfully rustic, tactile and earthy feel. The front is adorned with a characteristic plant motif depicting Provençal flowers and leaves. The pattern is cut and carved by hand directly into the raw clay, which gives deep, graphic contours in relief. with its organic shape, the robust handle and the beautifully curved spout, the jug works equally well as a decorative vase or for serving at the table. The underside bears the artist's original hand-carved signature "Thiry". A genuine piece of French mid-century history that adds immediate character and French modernism to the contemporary home.
