A striking pair of Arts and Crafts candlesticks by Benham & Froud, England, circa 1880, based on a design associated with Christopher Dresser. Each candlestick is constructed around a broad domed copper base, supporting a finely proportioned brass stem articulated with spherical knops. A vertical hardwood handle is mounted alongside the stem with brass brackets and pointed finials, introducing both a practical and distinctly architectural element to the design. At the top, the candle socket is surrounded by a beautifully worked copper drip pan formed as a stylised flower. The scalloped, petal-like edge is individually cut and shaped, creating a striking contrast between the warm patinated copper and polished brass. The combination of copper, brass and dark hardwood gives the pair a particularly rich material character. The design has the progressive quality associated with Christopher Dresser's late-19th-century metalwork, reducing ornament to a combination of geometry, construction and simplified natural forms.
Despite their circa-1880 date, the candlesticks have an unexpectedly modern silhouette, reflecting the radical approach to form that made Dresser such an important precursor to modern design. Produced by Benham & Froud, the celebrated London metalworking firm closely associated with some of the most innovative domestic metalware of the period, the pair work equally well as functional candlesticks or as sculptural decorative objects. Their original surfaces retain an attractive, naturally developed patina across the copper and brass, adding depth and character without diminishing the clarity of the design.
