Antique devotional pastel depicting the Virgin Mary in prayer, with her hands clasped and her head covered by a deep blue veil, after the celebrated composition by Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (1609–1685).
An unsigned, hand-executed work on textured drawing card, remarkable for the gentle modelling of the face, subtle pastel colours and contemplative expression.
Presumed to date from the second half of the 19th century.
Presented in an antique black-painted wooden frame with decorative plaster mouldings.
The pastel appears well preserved overall. The drawing card shows age-related wear and fragile edges. The frame displays visible chips and losses to its decorative plaster.
Overall framed dimensions: 47 × 61 cm.
A traditional European religious artwork, suitable for collectors of devotional imagery and classical interiors.
The painting is after Sassoferrato and is not attributed to the original artist.
