Rare wall mirror designed by Ettore Sottsass Jr. and manufactured by Santambrogio & de Berti, Italy, 1957.
This exceptional wall mirror is an early and highly distinctive design by Ettore Sottsass Jr. from 1957, produced by Santambrogio & de Berti at a moment when Italian design was redefining the relationship between architecture, furniture and decorative objects.
The mirror is conceived as a vertical composition of three mirrored sections, with the upper and lower panels executed in dark grey mirrored glass and the central panel in clear mirror. This deliberate contrast creates a subtle optical rhythm, altering reflection, depth and light depending on the viewer's position.
Separating the mirrored elements and framing the top and bottom are finely executed pointed brass structures that introduce both architectural tension and sculptural refinement. These brass elements are not merely decorative but play a structural and visual role, emphasising verticality while adding warmth and material richness to the overall composition.
The result is a mirror that functions equally as a practical object and a wall-mounted design statement.
The mirror is preserved in fully original condition, with a beautiful and honest patina visible on both the front and the reverse. This surface ageing enhances its authenticity and reflects the originality of its materials and construction, qualities highly valued by collectors of early Italian modern design.
Its proportions are particularly appealing, making it easy to place in a hallway or transitional space, offering a final visual moment before leaving the home.
This mirror is a true collector's piece from Sottsass's early period, combining experimental material use, architectural thinking and refined craftsmanship. It stands as a rare and elegant example of mid-century Italian design, sought after by collectors for its originality, condition and unmistakable presence. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
