Pagode of China / Great Pagode of China
Amsterdam, 1728.
Original 18th-century engraving produced in the workshop of Bernard Picart, under the direction of the renowned Franco-Dutch engraver, as indicated by the inscription printed on the plate itself:
“B. Picart sculp. direxit 1728”
The print presents two large representations on a single sheet, titled “Pagode of China” and “Great Pagode of China,” showing in perspective the architectural and ceremonial layout of two Chinese religious complexes, with numerous figures, altars, deities, incense burners, ponds, and various ritual elements.
This work belongs to Picart's monumental publishing project on the religions and ceremonies of the world's various peoples, Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses des peuples idolatres (Ceremonies and Religious Customs of Idolatrous Peoples), published in Amsterdam by Jean Frédéric Bernard.
The Rijksmuseum holds a copy of this same print, also dated 1728, indicating that it was used in the second volume, first part, after page 232.
