The art of grounding together
sculptural up & down wall light — frankie cesare for f+m fos
two people. Two directions. One shared journey.
“together does not mean becoming one. It means remaining two, while choosing a direction to share.”
there is a beautiful paradox in human relationships.
we long to belong to someone, yet we also need the freedom to remain ourselves.
we want closeness, but sometimes we need distance. Not to escape, not to abandon, but simply to breathe.
and perhaps the most meaningful relationships are those in which distance does not threaten connection.
the art of grounding together was born from this thought — and from an unexpected source of inspiration: a traditional navigational instrument.
the instrument that inspired the sculpture
in nautical navigation, parallel rulers are formed by two straight edges connected by articulated metal arms.
the rulers can move apart and come together while maintaining their parallel relationship, allowing a navigator to transfer a direction across a chart.
two separate elements. A connection that permits movement. A direction that remains consistent.
for frankie cesare, this ingenious instrument became a metaphor for human relationships.
two people do not need to occupy the same space at every moment to share a life.
they may move apart, follow individual rhythms, discover different experiences and return to one another.
what matters is not the distance between them, but the connection they choose to preserve.
two independent sources of light
look at the sculpture.
one root reaches upwards.
the other extends downwards.
each has its own light, its own direction, its own intricate network of branches.
they do not imitate one another. They do not compete for the same space.
yet they emerge from a single connected composition.
the two illuminated forms represent two individuals, each possessing an independent inner light.
neither needs the other to become luminous.
they are already complete. Their connection is a choice, not a necessity.
and this is what makes their togetherness meaningful.
now look closer.
what appears to be a natural growth of roots is actually an extraordinarily intricate construction of copper wire.
each branch is created from more than 200 individual strands of wire, depending on its length.
the strands are gathered, twisted and progressively divided into smaller ramifications, entirely by hand, until the structure begins to resemble the irregular complexity of a real root.
there are no moulds determining the final silhouette.
each twist, division and change of direction is shaped through the experience and judgement of the artisan.
the result is neither a reproduction of nature nor a conventional decorative branch.
it is an interpretation of how nature grows — unpredictable, intricate and beautifully imperfect.
designed by frankie cesare and handcrafted in greece with his specialised team for f+m fos, the sculpture reflects the demanding craftsmanship behind the roots collection.
the colours of time
the version illustrated features a deep brown finish with delicate golden and copper-toned highlights.
the root structures are finished by hand to create subtle variations in colour and texture, enhancing the impression of natural ageing and organic growth.
the metal lamp holders are finished to harmonise with the roots, becoming part of the sculptural composition rather than separate functional elements.
alternative root finishes are available:
brown with gold and copper highlights
silver
ecru with gold highlights
copper with dark brown tips
because every piece is finished individually, slight variations in the patinas are a natural characteristic of the handmade process.
one light looks up. The other looks down.
the two light sources create a dialogue between opposite directions.
the upper light illuminates the branches as they rise, casting intricate shadows across the wall.
the lower light reveals the descending roots, their delicate ramifications appearing to grow towards the ground.
between them, the central structure becomes the meeting point of two independent worlds.
light reveals the sculpture.
shadow extends it beyond its physical dimensions.
and as the branches are repositioned, the relationship between the two changes.
the wall itself becomes part of the artwork — a quiet surface on which the sculpture continues to draw.
