Executed in finely cast, chased and mercury-gilt bronze (ormolu), the centerpiece is fitted with two hand-cut crystal dishes with broad faceted borders. The circular base is raised on finely modeled paw feet and enriched with an elaborate openwork frieze of foliate scrolls, palmettes, rosettes and winged motifs, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with the finest Parisian bronze work of the Empire period. The central fluted column is surrounded by four seated putti, individually modeled and holding various musical instruments and attributes. Particular attention has been given to the modeling of their faces, hair, anatomy and hands, as well as to the minute chasing of the surrounding ornament. Above the figures rises a second cut-crystal dish supported by a finely chased gilt-bronze stem decorated with classical foliage and terminating in a circular carrying handle. The sophisticated neoclassical design, quality of the casting and chasing, mercury gilding and combination of ormolu with cut crystal support an attribution to Pierre-Philippe Thomire, one of the most celebrated Parisian bronziers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The attribution is stylistic; no visible signature has been identified. A particularly fine example of French Empire decorative arts, combining sculptural quality with the elegance and precision characteristic of luxury Parisian production during the Napoleonic period.
