The restrained exterior opens by means of a large fall-front panel, revealing an elaborate architectural interior composed of multiple drawers of varying sizes, including secret drawers and hidden compartments. The interior is extensively decorated with intricate geometric marquetry in contrasting woods, including lemonwood and sandalwood. At the center is an architectural panel depicting a classical doorway or façade, surrounded by finely executed scrolling and geometric inlay. The remarkable density and precision of the decoration create a particularly rich interior in contrast to the more austere exterior. The cabinet retains substantial hand-forged iron mounts, including pierced lock plates, corner reinforcements and the prominent central locking mechanism. The bargueño is currently presented on a striking sculptural base in the form of a recumbent bear, cast in bronze and finished with a green patina. The bear base is a later addition, dating from the 20th century, and creates an unusual juxtaposition between an important early cabinet and modern sculptural design. A highly decorative and characterful piece, combining the craftsmanship of a 17th-century cabinetmaker with a bold sculptural presentation. Particularly suitable as a statement piece, collector's cabinet or writing desk.
