The scene is painted freehand in cobalt: a bird in flight among flowering branches, a subject Dutch potters took from Chinese export porcelain in the seventeenth century. The painter moves from fine outline to broad wash, which gives the blossoms depth, and the decoration runs all the way around the baluster body. Underneath are the factory monogram, model number 874, and the painter's initials, V.E.

The shade is trimmed top and bottom in tonal braid from Houlès, the Paris passementerie house, and the cord is wrapped in matching fabric. This piece has an attribution mark,
