Original japanese sosaku hanga woodblock print masao ido "ginkaku-ji temple in autumn" 2001
framed by a fiery lace of maple leaves in scarlet, orange and gold, the silver pavilion of ginkaku-ji emerges quietly from the kyoto foliage in this masterful autumn composition by masao ido. Ido's signature stippled, granular application of pigment gives every surface a tactile warmth — from the weathered dark timber of the temple's upper gallery to the moss-softened stones of the path below — building a scene of layered, contemplative stillness that is instantly recognizable as his own.
ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺), the "temple of the silver pavilion," was built in 1482 as a retirement villa for shogun ashikaga yoshimasa and later converted into a zen buddhist temple of the rinzai sect. A unesco world heritage site, it is celebrated above all for its autumn foliage, when the surrounding hillside of maples turns the grounds into precisely the kind of vivid tapestry ido has captured here.
this impression is numbered 13/200, and titled, dated and signed by the artist in pencil in the lower margin, with his carved red seal stamped at the lower right — all hallmarks of an authentic, hand-pulled sōsaku-hanga print. It remains in its original japanese wooden frame, complete with the original gallery label from kyoto on the reverse.

about the artist masao ido (井堂雅夫, 1945–2016) was born in manchuria and raised in morioka, iwate prefecture, before relocating to kyoto in 1959. He apprenticed under the traditional dye artist kōnan yoshida before turning to woodblock printmaking in 1972, honing his craft under nitten council member shigechika ōtsubo. A leading figure of the postwar sōsaku-hanga ("creative print") movement — in which the artist conceives, carves and prints each work entirely by hand — ido devoted his career to kyoto's temples, gardens and back streets, rendered in bold, textured planes of color. His prints are held in major public collections, including the los angeles county museum of art and the tokyo national museum.
