The plaque originates from Sundell’s sought-after maritime series "Navigare". It depicts Sweden’s historic first steamboat, Stockholmshäxan (also known as Häxan or Trollet), developed by British-Swedish industrialist Samuel Owen, who conducted test voyages across Riddarfjärden in Stockholm in 1816. Rendered in detailed low relief with an incised, graphic engraving technique, the steamboat and its billowing sails are highlighted in monochrome black-and-white glazes, enclosed in a soft oval framing set against an ochre-mustard glazed border. About the Designer Britt-Louise Sundell (1928–2011) was an essential creative force at the Gustavsberg porcelain factory for over three decades. After studying at Konstfack in Stockholm, she joined Gustavsberg in 1954, working alongside legendary figures such as Stig Lindberg, Wilhelm Kåge, and Lisa Larson. Sundell gained international acclaim for her versatility, designing celebrated functional dinnerware, expressive studio ceramics, public art installations, and illustrative stoneware plaques. Details & Markings The unglazed ceramic reverse features a printed historical text detailing Samuel Owen's ship, alongside the series and designer attribution: "NAVIGARE / B. Sundell" and the stamped Gustavsberg anchor mark. It retains its original mounted metal suspension loop, ready for wall hanging.
