This is a vintage Japanese lacquer tortoise/turtle trinket or jewelry box. This type of traditional decorative box is typically made from a lightweight wood base that is skillfully shaped, painted with detailed shell patterns, and covered in a highly glossy urushi lacquer finish. The shell acts as a removable lid to store small keepsakes, rings, or tokens. In Japanese culture, the tortoise (kame) is an auspicious symbol that represents longevity, wisdom, and protection.
