Andy Warhol - 1986 'San Francisco Silverspot Butterfly' limited edition lithograph print from his 1983 'Endangered Species' portfolio. Signed in the plate and hand-numbered 952/2400 with CMOA stamp on the reverse, aka The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA (Warhol's birthplace) published limited edition lithographs of his work in 1986, shortly before his death. These are authenticated as a limited edition.
Warhol's 'Endangered Species' series is a result of a conversation he had with art dealer couple, Ronald and Frayda Feldman. Their environmental concerns drew on Warhol's lifelong fascination with insects and animals, prompting him to shift momentarily from his usual abstract pop art to something more conceptually grounded. The effect of his 'Endangered Species' portfolio inspired Warhol to donate his 15-acre property in Long Island, New York, to the Nature Preserve. Today, the property has been re-titled as the Andy Warhol Preserve.
