This expressive ceramic zebra sculpture, signed and dated 1981 by The Townsends, is a standout example of American figural ceramics from the late 20th century. Known for their lifelike animal forms and glossy finishes, Townsend Ceramic & Glass Inc. produced a variety of decorative works with character and charm. This reclining zebra features hand-painted black and white stripes beneath a high-gloss glaze, bringing the creature’s form and personality to life.

With a slightly stylized pose—resting with legs tucked and head alert—the piece captures a sense of both motion and repose. Measuring just over 10 inches high and 19 inches long, it’s large enough to make a visual impact while still practical for tabletop or shelf display. The piece rests on a hollow base and remains in very good vintage condition.

A collector’s piece with whimsical appeal, this 1981 ceramic zebra reflects the playful side of American studio ceramics and adds a bold graphic element to any decor. See less
