An exceptional late-19th-century American pressed-glass covered compote in Gillinder & Sons’ celebrated Frosted Lion pattern, introduced circa 1877.
Standing approximately 14 inches tall, this substantial example combines a clear pressed-glass bowl and domed cover with beautifully modeled frosted-glass lion elements. Multiple lion heads form the sculptural pedestal above a broad frosted scalloped foot, while an additional dimensional lion serves as the finial of the matching cover.
The contrast between transparent and frosted glass gives the piece remarkable presence, particularly at this larger scale. The cover incorporates a distinctive raised decorative border.
A wonderful surviving example of Victorian-era American decorative glass, equally compelling displayed closed or with the cover removed.
