An exquisite expression of traditional Chinese decorative artistry, this vintage four-panel folding screen presents an expansive, beautifully composed garden narrative distinguished by its delicate brushwork, graceful figures, and remarkable attention to ornamental detail. Measuring an impressive 73 inches across, this captivating work brings together the refinement of classical Chinese figure painting and the architectural presence of a substantial decorative screen.
The composition celebrates the centuries-old Chinese artistic tradition of Meiren, or Beautiful Ladies, a distinguished subject within Chinese figurative painting that portrays elegantly dressed women in cultivated garden settings. Across four interconnected panels, a gathering of beautifully attired ladies unfolds within an idyllic landscape of flowering gardens, ornamental rock formations, bamboo groves, elegant pavilions, and distant mountains overlooking tranquil waters. The figures, rendered in flowing robes with intricately arranged hairstyles and delicate accessories, possess the quiet dignity and understated elegance characteristic of traditional Chinese courtly imagery.
The painting demonstrates the refined visual language associated with Gongbi, the meticulous fine-line technique employed in classical Chinese painting. Delicate contours define the figures, garments, architecture, and landscape features, while carefully restrained washes of celadon green, pale rose, warm ochre, ivory, and soft charcoal establish an exceptionally harmonious palette. Particularly noteworthy is the artist’s treatment of the textiles, where fine linear detailing and subtle variations in color lend movement and dimension to the graceful folds of the women’s garments.
Rather than presenting four independent illustrations, the artist has orchestrated a continuous panoramic composition. Architectural elements and garden walls provide a rhythmic horizontal structure, while carefully positioned figures and natural formations guide the eye across the entire scene. Generous areas of open space allow the intricate figurative passages to breathe, reflecting the traditional Chinese aesthetic appreciation of balance, restraint, and the relationship between architecture and nature.
Of particular interest is the calligraphic inscription appearing in the lower portion of the composition, accompanied by a traditional red seal-script mark. The inscription has been attributed to Yang Zhi (仰之), providing an intriguing artistic identification and an important element of the work’s traditional presentation. Together, the signature and red seal contribute to the composition’s character as a work conceived within the visual conventions of Chinese scholarly and decorative painting.
The painted composition is presented against a softly textured cream-colored ground believed to be silk, beautifully complemented by an integrated border of golden-orange silk brocade woven with traditional floral and scrolling vine motifs. This richly patterned textile introduces a sophisticated ornamental contrast to the restrained palette of the central painting, recalling the luxurious fabric mountings traditionally associated with Chinese paintings and decorative screens.
The four panels are enclosed within a dark brownish-black lacquered wooden framework, creating a striking visual boundary that emphasizes the composition’s horizontal proportions. Decorative metal fittings featuring incised floral and geometric ornamentation provide additional architectural interest, while the interconnected construction allows the panels to be arranged as a freestanding accent screen or displayed as an expansive decorative artwork.
Manufactured in Hong Kong, circa 1970s, the screen belongs to the broader tradition of twentieth-century Chinese decorative arts produced for international interiors. Its original reverse inventory label, identifying Article No. 773 and Order No. 82054, remains intact, providing a valuable surviving detail of the object’s commercial history.
An especially appealing characteristic of this example is its uncommon horizontal proportion. At 73 inches wide and only 36 inches high, the screen achieves the presence of a large-scale decorative painting without the imposing vertical dimensions of a conventional full-height room divider. This makes it particularly well suited for sophisticated residential interiors, where it can serve as a magnificent focal point above a sofa, complement a substantial dining credenza, anchor a richly layered Asian-inspired interior, or introduce an elegant counterpoint to French, Italian, and mid-century modern furnishings.
The combination of intricate figurative painting, traditional silk brocade, beautifully proportioned lacquered framing, and a continuous four-panel garden composition gives this vintage screen a distinctive decorative identity. Equally compelling as an artwork and an architectural furnishing, it represents a particularly elegant interpretation of traditional Chinese aesthetics for the discerning collector or interior designer.

The painted composition retains its delicate detailing, soft coloration, and overall visual integrity, with no significant tears or severe water staining apparent in the supplied photographs. A small, isolated drip of opaque white paint, approximately 1/16 inch wide by 1/4 inch long, is present over a floral detail within the painted composition. This historic blemish has been left untouched to preserve the surrounding original surface. The upper wooden framework exhibits scattered small white paint speckles, an area of whitish surface residue or finish irregularity, and minor localized abrasions. These characteristics are visible in the accompanying detail photographs and have been preserved without cosmetic alteration. The dark lacquered wooden framework displays additional age-related wear, including surface scratches, scattered scuffs, small finish losses, edge abrasions, and localized areas of exposed wood, particularly along the upper and lower rails and near the panel joints. The reverse exhibits evidence of previous hanging or mounting, including localized indentations and gouges, old attachment marks and holes, and associated finish losses along the upper wooden rails. Small openings and localized wear are also visible along the upper edge of the textile backing. These areas are primarily situated on the reverse and do not materially detract from the screen’s front-facing decorative presentation. The decorative metal fittings exhibit age-related surface patina. The screen retains its original four-panel construction and textile-backed reverse. The screen is offered in its existing vintage condition, without refinishing, repainting, or cosmetic restoration of the described imperfections. Please examine all photographs, including the detailed images of the painted surface, wooden framework, and reverse, as these constitute an important part of the condition disclosure. less
