Introduce a stunning element of organic modernism to your space with this exceptional vintage studio art pottery vessel. Hand-thrown on the wheel, this balanced globe form features an incredibly active, painterly surface achieved through traditional saggar firing—a meticulous process where natural elements paint directly onto the clay body inside the kiln.
The unglazed exterior showcases a breathtaking, asymmetrical palette that shifts from smoky charcoal grays and deep volcanic hues to soft blushes of iron rust, warm cream, and rose pink. The surface is beautifully complex, featuring intricate carbon traps, halos, and variegated spotting cascading down the shoulders. A rich, dark iron-brown glaze lines the interior, breaking over the outer rim to display unique yellowish ash blushes.
The base features prominent concentric throwing lines and is fully signed by the artisans. It is hand-incised "Canupp" alongside the studio initials "R/C" and a distinct Ichthys (fish symbol) potter's stamp.
Perfect for Wabi-Sabi, brutalist, or earthy modern interiors, this signed regional art piece offers incredible visual texture and sculptural presence.
About the Artists
Richard and Wanda Canupp (R/C Canupp) were accomplished studio ceramicists operating out of North Carolina, a state celebrated for its deep-rooted heritage in American pottery. They are collected for their masterful exploration of atmospheric kilns and alternative firing techniques, capturing the natural elements of earth, smoke, and flame in one-of-a-kind vessels.
